About the event
Probably, the fact that “commissar members” from two cities met – the cultural capital of Russia and the capital of the Don Cossacks – is symbolic. From the first days, work on the play was filled with an atmosphere of warmth, creativity and mutual understanding. Chekhov's lively, deep language informs the stage narrative emotionally and very convincingly. Contrary to popular belief that staging "The Steppe" in the theater is not an easy task, since the story is full of reflections and descriptions of nature, Leonid Alimov fills this story with numerous plot twists, even some intrigues, in which the main character - the boy Yegorushka - learns not much, no less, real life.
We watch how his childhood develops into adolescence, how his soul matures after each meeting. It is not for nothing that the performance is designated as a parable based on the writer’s lyrical works: in addition to the story itself, the stories “In the Native Corner”, “Pecheneg”, “Student”, “On the Cart”, “Champagne” are woven into it. The director himself says that the story about how a boy leaves his father’s house and goes on an adventure is an eternal Odyssey for every person who goes through a life-long journey.
The performance turned out to be “very Russian, not tied to any boundaries of time or place”: the main thing here is the connection with one’s land, its history, and people. Everything is subordinated to this idea: scenery, music, costumes and, of course, the style of the story.
