• *Balda in Russian - means a stupid or just simple, not very serious or smart enough person. The poem tells us of a lazy priest who is looking for a cheap worker. There he meets a man Balda, who agrees to work for a year without pay except that he be allowed to snap the priest with a finger three times on his forehead. The priest, being a cheapskate, agrees.
