About the event

The play “JAMAIS (JAME)” is based on the real facts of the life of A.P. Chekhov and his love affair with Lydia Stakhievna Mizinova. The action of the play takes place in a variety of “Chekhov’s” places in Russia – Melikhovo, Bogimov, Moscow, Yalta, and Sakhalin. The play, with the greatest possible care, restores the vicissitudes of the love affair between Chekhov and Lika Mizinova, a stormy, furious, painful and tender romance at the same time. A novel that never received its conclusion, remaining a broken story without resolution or ending. The nickname that Chekhov gave Lika - “Jamais”, which translated from French means “Never”, determined the development of this story and its ruthless ending.

The performance features actors from the Melikhovo Chekhov Studio Theater. Sergei Fatyanov and Svetlana Gerasimovich are trying with close inquisitiveness to understand the most complex psychological aspects of the love relationship between Anton Pavlovich and Lika. In the play, actor Andrei Bogdanov puts on a dozen masks at once - from real historical characters Isaac Ilyich Levitan, Alexei Sergeevich Suvorin, Ignatius Nikolaevich Potapenko, to heroes who arose in the author’s imagination - an unknown provincial actor, a drunk passer-by on a Moscow embankment, a lieutenant gendarme on a ship sailing to Sakhalin.

The performance uses literary texts by A.P. Chekhov, materials from GLMMZ A.P. Chekhov “Melikhovo”, as well as correspondence from A.P. Chekhov and L.S. Mizinova.
