The characters from this play by Chekhov seem to come to life on the manor landscape of Melikhovo. The performance is not staged in an enclosed theater room, but in the open air of the estate where Anton Pavlovich Chekhov lived and worked on the play.
Melikhovo has undoubtedly become the prototype of the Voynitsky family's estate. Ivan Petrovich and Sonya are engaged in the same household as the inhabitants of Melikhovo during Chekhov's time. These characters are profound and in their essence! This feature is skillfully conveyed by the actors of the Melikhovo Theater. Look, how much wisdom and humility there is in the final scene of the play ... To truly appreciate the beauty and tranquility of this scene, one needs to have experienced life. To overcome pain, tears, betrayal, disappointment and hopelessness, one has to find the strength to overcome his longing for a better life, then to sit down at the table, to dip a pen in ink and start counting buckwheat and vegetable oil: "February 2nd, vegetable oil 20 pounds ..."
Whereas, the medical missionary activity of Anton Pavlovich in the Serpukhov Zemstvo Council and in Melikhovo, of course, served as the basis for featuring the character of Dr. Astrov.
Each character in the play has their own unique story, which, according to director Kirill Loskutov's vision, come together to create a unified drama of life. Every hero and every actor in this play is a soloist. In the performance, the director followed Chekhov's approach of leaving the audience to form their own judgements and understanding of the characters. And what is most importantly, the play is still relevant today! How often people destroy love and, at times, sacrifice it for petty interests. This performance is not about the fate of the intelligentsia at the turn of the century, it is about people outside the time frame, about human feelings and lost lives. Their life has failed, they are ridiculous, but "we must live", and they do live. To understand the essence of human relationships, one has to come to this performance!
